Celebrating My Five-Year Cancer-versary

Five years ago today, at 9am, I slipped away from my desk at Dolly magazine and walked to my hand doctor’s office with excitement. Two weeks prior I’d had surgery to remove fluid on my left middle finger and biopsies to try and work out why I had strange little lumps popping up all over my hand arm. Being a firm fixture on the Sydney social scene, the cast I’d had to wear for the two weeks was a drag. It was uncomfortable and impossible to hide in photographs, and I was peeved off having to type with one hand at work. With the MTV awards just two days away, I was keen to get the thing off.

I haven’t eaten anything that isn’t organic in three years – to the day, today actually (it’s been three years since I started Gerson Therapy – woo!). And I don’t plan on ever going back to eating conventional food. Honestly, I don’t see why organic food should be made out to be the odd way of eating when it’s actually the way we are designed to eat. In a couple of weeks it will have been three years since I started Gerson Therapy, and one year since I completed it. However, when I say ‘completed it’, I don’t mean stop-all-together-and-go-back-to-eating-crap. Far from it. These days, my diet is still very much rooted in the Gerson foundation and I absolutely love it.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t pause and silently thank the universe for how amazingly blessed I am, but on the weekend that I went to Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, these silent “thank yous” became my mantra. I was constantly overwhelmed by the amount of beauty, love and joy I was surrounded with – and couldn’t help thanking whoever is responsible for creating it and collaborating with me on bringing it into my life.

The first time I’d heard of the concept of raw food (apart from when I was younger and refused to eat ANY cooked veggies) was on that episode of Sex And The City when Sam was stalking Smith Jerrod and sat through an entire meal of cold soup and other elements resembling lawn clippings. I remember thinking that anyone who went to a raw restaurant was a nutter. These days, I recognise raw cuisine for the art form that it is. Raw desserts, in particular, are my favourite things to make and eat. But is an all-raw diet good for us?

Many people think they have to give up noodles when they start eating healthy, but that’s not the case in our book. Especially when you can have noodles made from such genius culinary elements as zucchini and sea veggies.

Are you sitting near another person at the moment? Have you been talking to someone else recently? Thinking of someone else? On current estimates, one in nearly every two people alive today will develop cancer in their lifetime. That is way too many. But if you have someone else near to you, that is two people. So who might it be? How good would it be to save a life in 2013?

If I had just five second to stand up on a global soap box and declare something to the masses, it would be this: Being healthy does not mean deprivation. In order to adopt a clean and healthy diet, you don’t actually have to give anything up. It’s simply about educating yourself and swapping out junk foods by replacing them with foods that are natural, whole, nutritious and way more satisfying.

As we lean into a new year, many of us will be reflecting on the year that was and dream about the year that is to be. What we have done, how we feel about it, and what we will make of another year, another opportunity to ‘get it all right’.
