Over the last few months, I’ve experienced some massive shifts. The biggest one has been detachment. I’m less focused on rules and regimes and more about opting in to the best life possible by releasing attachment to anything that was restricting me from doing so. I’m not reverting back to being irresponsible and treating my body like a trashcan, but I’m learning more and more about the importance of looking after ourselves while having the best time ever. Not sacrificing one for the other.

This is the second post in a four-part blog series written by one of my favourite spiritual teachers, Anita Moorjani. Anita is the author of the book Dying To Be Me, and her story and words have the power to transform in ways you’ll never expect. I hope you enjoy the series!

Guest post by Anita Moorjani.

When I was dealing with cancer I came across a lot of healers. In my mind it’s very clear as to what distinguishes a great healer from a good healer. A great healer empowers you. A not-so-great healer disempowers you. What I mean by that is that for a healer to really be great, they must empower you to realise that the power of healing is within you. A great healer should help you understand that you have you have the power and ability to heal. They are just a channel, a bridge to take you from where you are to where you want to be. But the healing is yours.

Recently, my best friend in the whole world came home for a visit. She lives in Holland at the moment, which I can’t stand. We’ve been besties since we met back in 1998, and whenever we’re together we have so much fun. While she was home this time we gathered up the rest of our crew for a girl’s night. Think a couple of organic preservative-free red wines, some yummy organic snacks and a night of dancing to a band playing fun pub tunes.

How could I have said something so stupid? That was so dumb of me! I should have known better! I will never get it right! Why am I even bothering to try? Does any of this sound familiar to you? That was my inner voice, several years ago. That was the voice in my head, constantly nagging and putting me down. Wishing I was better, smarter, stronger, more spiritual. Wishing I was anyone but who I am. The most meaningful lesson I learned from being at death’s door is that unless I love myself, nothing else in my life can function at its best.

I watched the movie The Secret for the first time recently. I felt like I’d already seen it because it’s messages have been repeated continuously over the years. On the whole I love what this film teaches: being conscious of our thoughts and using those thoughts to attract what we want. But I feel there’s one aspect about this that can be misunderstood. Which is the idea that we have to think positively all of the time.
