The Best Day Ever With David Wolfe + A Green Superfoods Giveaway!

Posted May 29, 2013

I’m still buzzing from David Wolfe’s conference on Saturday. This is the second time I’ve seen David do his thing on stage, and the eccentric nutrition expert never fails to deliver. His knowledge of everything from superfoods, super herbs, and medicinal mushrooms to hormones, joint health and disease prevention and healing is mind-blowing; and his presence alone is just so entertaining.

The highlight of the day was winning one of the rawffle prizes (geddit, rawffle?). They scrolled through everyone’s names on the big screen, and mine was the first to be picked. Then, as I was heading up to collect my goodies, David recognised me from an interview I did with him and pulled me up onto stage, gave me a mic and let me share a bit of my story with the crowd. Talk about a pinch-myself moment.

If you’ve ever heard David speak before, you’ll know how much information he churns out. These are just some of the most fascinating bits I jotted down in my notebook:

Wisdom from Mr Wolfe

+ “The thing you should do sucks. The thing you will do rocks!” Start with what is easy and enjoyable for you to do.

+ Build up daily healthy habits to stack the odds in your favour. Incorporate these habits into your life easily – like when you’re sitting in traffic or some other situation when you’re not doing anything anyway. Utilise the time to take herbal tinctures, repeat affirmations etc.

+ Creating a healthy habit is simple. You know the feeling of having a few too many drinks, going to bed and then realising that you forgot to brush your teeth? As soon as you have that thought, you force yourself to get up and brush your teeth. If you can do that, you can do anything! It’s all about creating a habit.

+ Business is spiritual because it expands your capabilities and pushes you to a level of goal setting that you wouldn’t get to otherwise.

+ Medicinal mushrooms (reishi, chaga, shiitake, cordyceps, trametes etc.) are the most powerful healing foods.

+ Cholesterol is the precursor of all hormones. Cholesterol lowering medication wreaks havoc with our hormones.

+ Progesterone cream is one of the most protective supplements we can utilise when it comes to hormone-related disease prevention. It’s also very protective during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy.

+ Nettle root (best in tincture form) prevents male pattern baldness.

+ No matter what the problem is, the solution is already there available to us. This is the way that the universe is worked out.

+ Good bacteria in the mouth leads to healthy teeth. Constant use of conventional toothpastes and mouthwashes are like disinfectants, wiping out both good and bad bacteria. We need to replenish the good bacteria in our mouths. Neem is great for this.

+ Cacao is high in iron – higher than any other plant. It’s also high in magnesium. This combo could explain why women crave chocolate when they have their period.

+ If you consume a stimulant, you must balance it with an anti-stimulant (eg. cacao and mucuna).

+ Wake up every morning and chant, “This is going to be the best day ever” over and over again.

I bumped into the gorgeous Kim Morrison from Twenty8 Skincare and Cyndi O’Meara from Changing Habits.

This is me with Donna from MicrOrganics Green Nutritionals. I had the pleasure of helping these guys out on their vendor stand during the breaks.

With Donna, Nadine Ominski (who was also on the stand with us) and Monique Pollard from Ground Café (and last week’s Foodie Friday).

MicrOrganics Green Nutritionals are letting me give you guys some of their awesome Green Superfoods powder and glass straws.

This is my favourite green superfood blend, because it includes high percentages of what I consider to be the best greens – spirulina and chlorella, followed by a slightly lower percentage of alfalfa, barley grass and marine plant minerals. The number one reason why I use Green Nutritionals products over any others (besides the fact that they taste better) is because they’re stored in glass and they utilise the ‘LOCTEC’ oxygenless storage system, which is the best way to protect the superfoods’ nutritents. The biggest enemy of superfoods is oxygen, which can quickly damage sensitive vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants, reducing nutritional potency.

Today I’m giving away five 150mg bottles of Green Superfoods powder, plus five glass frog straws.

If you would like to be one of the five winners, leave a comment under this post telling me your favourite green smoothie recipe.

Comp closes next Tuesday, 4 June and winners will be notified via email on Wednesday 5 June. Good luck!

Click here to watch my interview with David.

Positive affirmation for the day: Today is the best day ever.

Hi Jess,

My co-worker and I live & work on a remote mine site in Western Australia. We have our food provided to us so have very limited choice of healthy and fresh food but luckily sometimes have access to spinach leaves, pears / apples, celery, cucumber and lemon. We add tbsp of coconut oil and some chia seeds or superfood powders which we purchase online. We blend it all up with a stick blender which takes a bit of time and patience, however the results are tasty, bit lumpy but nevermind! : )

Super cool. My fave green smoothie is what I call the “Blast Off”; its in line with David’s philosophy of chucking everything you have at it! Begin with cooled gynosteema tea, 2 opened Cordyseps capsules and 4 opened Magu Treasure capsules (Ron Teequarden’s Dragon Herbs), add MicrOrganics Spirulina in Summer (as it’s cooling) or MicrOrganics Chlorella in Winter (as this is warming), Maca (every second day), Cacao, Cumu Camu, Chia seeds and Astragalus. This drink is energy packed and blasts me into the day. PS it also helped cured me of 2 auto-immune diseases

Lou Leigh says:

To sweeten add half a dropper of English Toffee Liquid Stevia or raw honey if candida in not a problem

Krystal says:

This is very similar to what I have prior to eating dinner. Instead of the tea I use water kefir, but I must try the tea some time. I also have the chlorella and spirulina based on the time of year (warming vs cooling effect) but I have them in my green smoothie recipe which I posted here). I too am on the Chinese herbs you mention. Excellent that this superdrink has helped you to overcome some health issues :)

so sorry i couldn’t make it to hear the man speak in person – it’s fantastic that someone with such charisma is out there spreading the enthusiasm for what is simply living! so, my favourite green smoothie recipe:
spinach, celery, corriander, spirulina, tumeric, ginger, garlic, almonds, coconut water, just a sprinkle of cinnamon on top and you will be zinging and full of energy. oh and as for quantities/ratios, that just depends on how much of each I have on hand and whether I need it extra-zingy or just a little more mellow (that is in relation to the garlic/ginger and tumeric). this is also a great energy booster after physical exercise (be that work-related or just for pleasure). keep spreading the good word(s)!

Krystal says:

If you have a SENSITIVE STOMACH and are prone to bloating/gas/leaky gut/IBS and other digestive issues, it’s a good idea to KEEP FRUITS AND VEGETABLES SEPARATE rather than combining them in smoothies or juices which can wreak havoc on the gut (leading to putrification and slower/incomplete digestion). I eat my fruit on an empty stomach an hour after drinking clay and additional water. I don’t eat any more fruit and from there on its green smoothies, juices, salads consisting of only veggies/sprouts. For dinner I have steamed veggies with some kind of protein.
My green smoothie recipe varies depending on the seasons and availability of produce but generally it’s something like this:

Detoxifying Green Smoothie
– coconut kefir or milk kefir (to make the milk more digestible and full of good bacteria).
– 2-3 kale leaves
– handful spinach
– chunk of ginger
– 1/4 beetroot (for sweetness) and beet tops if available
– dash of green powdered stevia (optional for extra sweetness)
– tsp of MSM or diatomaceous earth
– tsp of chlorella or spirulina
– tsp of powdered superfood
Another tip I have learned is to “chew” the smoothie rather than glug it down quickly. Once you have sucked it up with the straw, let it sit in the mouth a bit before swallowing. This helps to produce enzymes in the saliva and to prepare the stomach for what is about to come! If the taste receptors on the tongue can sense bitterness (for example in the kale leaves) then it triggers the liver to detoxify.

Krystal says:

Forget to mention adding in a few mint leaves for extra zing. From someone that never liked anything minty, I am now addicted(!!!) and got half a dozen varieties of mint growing in pots on my back steps

Rachel says:

Green smoothies are life changing. I know it’s a big call, most people say that about falling in love or finding God (Universe, Source etc). I must say that my mind and spirit found God and body found Love in my green smoothies. Holy cow – they’re amazing. When my mum had to face up to some serious facts about her health recently the first thing I did was show her the power of a green smoothie and man they’re a game changer. She’s obsesssed… I now travel with my blender, half of which comes in my hand luggage. Like I said – Obsessed :)
I make a litre of this and sip on it until lunchtime. (all Organic ingredients)
– Juice of one lemon
– 1/4 Avocado
– small handful of activated Almonds
– Two deliciously curly beautiful Kale leaves
– 1 Celery Stalk
– Fresh mint
– Frozen Bananna
– 1/2 Green Apple
– Young Coconut water and flesh (scoop that goodness outta there!)
– Tsp Raw Honey
Now spike with your favourite superfoods – I use

– Marine Phytoplankton
– Spirulina
– Chia Seeds

Sprinkle with Gojis for colour and serve…

Kate says:

Hi Jess

1 Avocado
1 Coconut
1 Banana
1/4 Pinapple

Lindsay says:

My green smoothie may not be too adventurous, but I do have one every single day so points for consistency! I small frozen banana, juice of 1/2 lemon, three kale leaves, juice of a small apple, water and 1 1/2 teaspoons of maca powder. Yum!

Harriet says:

Hi Jess!
I’ve found this one to be the most refreshing, tasty and sustaining also the lemon makes the iron more easily absorbed and the chia adds protein. There are a lot of ingredients but it makes a great breaky, I add cacao instead of maca if I need a boost:
2 stalks kale
2 stalks celery
1 carrot
1 lemon juiced
Ginger ( big chunk)
Coconut water
1/4 cucumber
Chia seeds

Kylii says:

In the mornings I have always struggled to start right (I tend to get there half way through the day), so I have started making a green juice last thing at night with celery, green apple and lemon in it. I also keep bananas in the freezer. So first thing now, I pour some juice into my vitamix throw in some frozen banana and kale, plus my MSM, Vit C powder, Magnesium Powder and maca, whiz and enjoy in the car on the way to Uni instead of coffee!! Having the juice premade, may not be ideal for nutrients but it has allowed me to start and continue with a good habit.
Love your work Jess

Katherine says:

My Green Berry Blend

Aimee says:

Hey hey,
I love coconut water, kale, spinach, rainbow chard, parsley, spirulina powder, chia seeds, lucuma, maqui, cocoa, small handful of goji berries, 1/2 a lemon, 1/2 a frozen banana and 1/2 cup mixed berries. It fills me up for hours and hours and has me buzzing with energy all day! And drinking it out of fun glassware would make it even better :)

courtney brown says:

Hi Jess, would love to find some of this but where can you get it?
I have no favourite smoothie recipe because nearly every one of them is different and that’s how it should be right?! Keep getting a variety of minerals and nutrients into our system to get overall benefit. Plus on the days the kale makes itself into yummy baked chips instead of smoothies means spinach becomes the green of choice :-)
But I always, always add to every smoothie: maca powder, green superfood powder, bee pollen and acai when I want an antiox hit.
So super thank you for getting me hooked on my smoothies – love them!

Clare says:

Hi Jess! I love kale, cucumber, banana, some lemon juice, coconut oil and chia seeds. Thanks to healthTalks i learnt how easy it is to make in my good old blender! Thanks for all you do :)

Catherine Elliott says:

My fave green smoothie is the following:
Kiwi fruit (skin on for more fibre)
One banana
Splash coconut milk
And cold green tea as the base.
It’s a fresh mix each day and the portions are never the same but mainly vege based with one- two fruit pieces!
Ps love your blog!!!!

Catherine Elliott says:

My fave mix is: kale, spinach, celery, carrot, beetroot, kiwi fruit with skin on, mint, one banana, ginger, splash coconut milk, green tea as the base, flaxseed and chia seeds, and some nuts (whatever I have around). It’s always a random ratio but is amazing and great for you and always makes enough so I can drink more throughout the day!

Glenda Stojan says:

Rebecca says:

My favourite green smoothie is not green… it’s grey. I have created perhaps the ugliest smoothie ever! The colour is because it has green powder (similar to the above you’re promoting Jess but maybe not as good?) and blueberries=grey. It also has a banana, coconut water, bee pollen, maca, goji berries, probitoic powder, hemp and chia seeds, ground linseeds, cacao nibs, L-glutamine powder (to heal my leaky gut), cinnamon, coconut oil and rice bran. A bit excessive maybe but I feel like I am covering all bases with this one. And it is really yummy, despite its ugliness. Having trouble converting anyone though, might need to pretty it up!

MelB says:

Kimberly Snyder’s glowing green smoothie. The ingredients are easy to obtain, dont cost the earth (you may even grow some of your own) and importantly taste great. I downloaded your smoothie recipe ebook a few years ago Jess and love them. Youre really only limited by your imagination when creating a smoothie :-)

Brandi says:

My favorite smoothie consists of almond milk, pineapple, spinach, parsley, mint, lemon, and raw honey.

My older sister was diagnosis with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer last Jan 2012. She is doing very well with daily green smoothie and the recipe is below…
spirulina, freeze-dried fermented beet juice made by my parents, freeze-dried fermented raw vegetables powder made by my parents, half organic apple, carrot, kale and collards. She sometime mix with other greens such as cucumber, celery, etc. Using Nutribullet by Wolfe. I personally think this green drinks help my sister’s cancer cells shrinking. =)

I must admit I’m new to this scene, but constantly inspired by not just your posts Jess but the community of followers. Sometimes, actually often people look at me strange for my food choices, or friends quiz me like I’m a freak about my health journey. But I am inspired reading all the green smoothie recipes (and taking notes).
After the recommendation the other week I purchased ‘Beauty Detox Foods’ and have been embarking on her Glowingly Green Smoothie every morning. One week in and I am feeling better and brighter (and proud).
I look forward to following a new path to a better me and being part of this community of Warriors!
Glowingly Green Smoothie (my version)
7 cups spinach
5 cups cos lettuce
1 large cucumber
I pear
1 banana
1/2 lemon juiced
2 cups cold filtered water.
Blend the liquid and lettuce/spinach first because if you have a normal blender this will take a while. It needs the most breaking down. Then throw the chopped cucumber and fruit in, whiz it up and enjoy.
This usually last me 2 days and I sometimes have it in the afternoon as well as morning.

My fav green smoothie, though I do agree it depends on the season and how I’m feeling, is indulgently nutritious as I can afford and currently looks like this: coconut water, maca, nettles, lettuce, cucumber, mint, coriander, celery and cacao powder plus any fresh sprouts I have on hand.. Deelish!

I am currently volunteering in Africa where there is no resource for fresh produce = no smoothies! Having no power doesn’t help either. I have Maca Powder and Spirulina that was sent accross from my BFF. Is it OK to blend these two together with nothing except filtered water for a morning drink?

Catherine says:

Kale, green apples, beets and ginger.

I would love to win some green food supplements. I am into low sugar smoothies right now. Taking a break from juicing. No counter space. I love kale Chips. So I make organic kale smoothies with vanilla protein powder and organic almond milk. Can add a few organic blueberries. I woukd live to learn about mushrooms particularly reishi, spelling? I need to incorporate a healing food,Supp, etcetera in my diet. My mom had morels growing on her farm that people woukd come at night and steal. But one day I got very sick and I think I may have had a poison or ate too many. Maybe you have insight? Thank you so much for your inspirational educational work you do. God bless
